The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering is one of the biggest engineering schools of its kind in the UK. In addition to holding two prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize we are home to two EPSRC National Centres, for Innovative Manufacturing in Regenerative Medicine and for Innovative Manufacturing in Intelligent Automation.

We are passionate about our research and continually strive to strengthen and stimulate our portfolio. Our industrially focused research enables us to work with some of the world’s most renowned engineering companies. Our current research portfolio value is £52 million.

The breadth of our research activity is captured in our Research Themes, that are served with research activities from our research groups and a number of leading-edge research centres that are hosted by the School. We host two of the National EPSRC Centres for Innovative Manufacturing (CIM), are partners in another three CIMs and lead two EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training, all of which represent funding of more than £90m.

We have also recently been selected to lead one of EPSRC’s multidisciplinary Grand Challenges, SYMETA (SYnthesizing 3D METAmaterials for RF, microwave and THz applications), that is addressing the use of meta materials for future generations of high bandwidth communications and microwave applications.

The School has a number of laboratories offering the latest equipment and industry-standard software. The laboratories cater for students interested in dynamics and control, automation, fluid mechanics, electrical power generation, renewable energy and energy storage, healthcare engineering, internal combustion engines, materials, mechatronics, radio engineering, metrology, optical engineering, additive manufacturing, structural integrity, thermodynamics and much more.

Entry requirements

A 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant discipline. Applicants with a 2:2 will be considered with a master’s degree (merit or above) or international equivalent. For all applicants, a relevant master’s degree or industry experience is advantageous and for some research projects, may be mandatory.
