Course Summary

This course aims to help you achieve a critically reflective but practical understanding of key current issues in educational leadership and management. Education professionals in all parts of the world need to develop their skills and understanding in leadership alongside their knowledge of learning and teaching.

Distinctive features of the course are: its aim to foster a greater understanding of the comparative context of educational organisations around the world, a practice-based approach and a strong focus on the latest thinking and research on educational effectiveness and leadership. This course is for professionals concerned with educational leadership and management in all sectors of education, including: school leaders, administrators, consultants and local government officials. It is also suitable for those with an emerging interest in educational leaders, leadership theory and practice.

You will have the opportunity to carry out a placement as part of your taught modules. Your placement will be in an educational setting such as a local primary or secondary school. This is enjoyable and useful in contextualising your understanding of learning theory. You also have the option of taking a longer placement outside the UK, adding to the international perspectives nature of the course.

This module aims to enable students who have chosen a specialist pathway to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a selected topic within the fields of: Educational Leadership and Management; Inclusive Education; Information, Communication and Entertainment Technology; International Development and Education; Pedagogy and Learning; to enable students who have opted for the more generic route, to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of an approved educational topic of their choice; to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the research process by devising and conducting an original investigation and to provide students with the opportunity both to extend their repertoire of methodological skills and demonstrate a capacity for critical reflexivity.

Students should have a 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in any subject. Experience in an educational context is desirable but not essential.
