MA English Literature

NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY, NEWCASTLE
Overall Rating

I did my MA during the pandemic via distance learning - in fact, onsite learners were required to do the same work in the same way as DL students due to the pandemic. Every week we had set reading (primary texts and critical articles) and had to contribute to an online forum answering specific questions designed to help us develop critical thinking - lecturers responded in detail to all of our posts, giving constructive feedback and ideas for further development. We also had to respond to others' posts and engage with the ideas of other learners. In addition to this, we also had to do presentations (voiced-over PPTs) and post them on the forum and give feedback to one another (lecturers also gave us detailed feedback). Lectures were recorded and released at the beginning of the week, but some were also live twice a week - we were encouraged to attend them if we could. There were four modules and we were required to submit two assignments per module - (a 2000 word assignment and a 4000 word assignment) and then complete a dissertation of 15000 words. I was really grateful for the one-to-one sessions with module lecturers to discuss our assignments. The MA was certainly challenging - but I really enjoyed the intellectual stimulation and learned a great deal from the course. I loved the Gothic Spaces and Critical Contexts modules. I also found the module on Dark Tourism fascinating. Some lecturers were more approachable and encouraging than others, but overall the experience was great. The course leader was very approachable and massively supportive! I also met some great people on the course. Now I've finished my MA, I am going back through my notes and reading some of the additional primary texts and critical theories and thinkers that interested me. I have so much reading to look forward to - a small part of me would like to do the MA all over again!

Uni Facilities

N/A - Distance learning student. But the online facilities were easy to navigate.
