Course Summary

Course Overview

This course is for people who want to help others to improve their movement – despite physical difficulties caused by illness, injury, disability or ageing.

In the UK all physiotherapists must be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Our course has been approved by HCPC and enables you to fulfil HCPC requirements. Employability rates following the course are excellent.

The course lasts for two years so that there is sufficient time for you to undertake six placements. In total you will accrue 1,000 hours of experience in a range of settings and contexts.

The advantages of this course include the breadth of our healthcare expertise, the variety of our placement opportunities, and the strong commitment to our values-based philosophy. Student satisfaction rates are exceptionally high.

Based on your particular interests, you can choose one of your placements in a clinical area and location that reflects your career aspirations. For example you could undertake a placement in another country in order to gain experience within a fresh culture and healthcare system.

Our curriculum is designed not just to meet academic requirements but also HCPC Standards of Proficiency. In addition the course is approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which further reflects its relevance to contemporary professional practice.

Throughout the course you will maintain a Personal and Professional Development File that will inform and support future employment opportunities. It will also provide a foundation for your continuing professional development after you leave Northumbria.

Your Future

On completion of this course you’ll be ready to seek professional registration with HCPC so that you can work as a physiotherapist with the NHS, local authorities, charities or private sector employers. Well over 90% of our students are in employment or further study within six months of completing the course.

If you choose to continue your studies to a higher level, your experience of postgraduate research will provide an excellent foundation.

Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. These include the ability to tackle complex issues through conceptualisation and undertaking research, the ability to contribute to new processes and knowledge, and the ability to formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data.

Modules

This module will provide you with the opportunity to build on the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours introduced within ?Physiotherapy professional practice studies 1? to critically explore the pathology, assessment, management, and practical intervention for people within the core areas of cardiorespiratory (spontaneously breathing person), musculoskeletal (peripheral joints), and neurology (stroke) physiotherapy.
