About Postgraduate Advertising

Advertising is a broad and widely applicable field which encompasses the strategic and creative aspects of marketing communications. Students study consumer behaviour, campaign planning and creative advertising techniques and entry requirements to a master’s level programme typically include a relevant undergraduate degree in marketing, communications or a related field. Master’s courses build on the skills and knowledge gained at undergraduate level and offer opportunities to specialise in particular areas of interest within the subject, which may form the basis for graduate employment.

Most master’s courses are a year in duration or two years with part-time attendance. There are also options for two-year courses with sandwich years, where you’ll spend time working in industry as part of your qualification. It is a popular course in the UK, with more than 20 master’s programmes currently available.

What to Expect

At master’s level, you can expect to study a variety of behavioural modules which cover topics like decision making processes, motivation, aspiration and urgency. You’ll also learn how to plan and deliver a successful marketing campaign through the analysis of case studies and creative advertising initiatives. Assessment methods can take a variety of forms and typically include portfolio submissions, presentations and extended research projects.

Once graduated, you’ll be well-prepared to take on roles as advertising managers, strategists, communications experts or creative directors, contributing to the success of advertising campaigns in various industries and the world of consumer marketing.
