Anaesthesiology is a specialised discipline within medicine that centres around providing expert medical care to patients before, during and after surgery. It’s an advanced branch of medical study that is available to postgraduate students of medicine, covering a range of processes including anaesthesia, pain management and emergency medicine.
Anaesthesiology students will gain the professional skills and academic knowledge required to work across clinical environments, from emergency rooms to labour wards and specialised operating theatres.
There are currently 10 courses to consider at 10 different UK universities.
You will typically need a medical degree or a degree in a related field such as nursing, biomedical science, or pharmacology to apply for a postgraduate course. You may also need some some relevant work experience in anaesthesiology, such as working as a nurse, physician, or other healthcare professional.
Courses will help you develop your skills and knowledge around anaesthesia and perioperative care, pain management and critical care medicine. You’ll also increase your understanding of research methods and gain practical experience in a clinical setting.
