Teaching art and design in schools can lead to a fulfilling career in which you’ll inspire children and teenagers to express themselves creatively, learning to use a variety of artistic mediums, and understand the cultural context behind visual ideas and ways of thinking. As well as guiding students though their creative studies, you’ll mentor them through GCSE and A-level qualifications which they may use as the foundation for their own higher education and professional journeys.
PGCE stands for Post Graduate Certificate in Education. It carries qualified teacher status (QTS), allowing you to teach in state schools across the UK. There are currently 22 art and design PGCE courses available in the UK, and admission generally requires an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area with a minimum qualification of 2:2.
You’ll learn the key requirement of how to organise and deliver structured learning to pupils of different age groups and backgrounds. The curriculum encompasses both theoretical and practical components, addressing contemporary and classic art forms, techniques, and the integration of technology in teaching. You’ll gain a comprehensive and hands-on education in lesson planning, assessment strategies, and fostering creative environments for students. The programme includes teaching placements in schools, allowing you to apply teaching principles and build a portfolio of teaching practice.
After course completion, you can expect to be well-prepared for the demands of teaching art and design in secondary schools, equipped with the necessary skills for a rewarding career in education.
