About Postgraduate Audiology

Audiology is a branch of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the auditory and vestibular systems. Audiologists identify and manage issues related to hearing and balance. Their expertise covers a wide range of conditions, including hearing loss, tinnitus and the prescription and fitting of hearing aids.

There are six universities in the UK which offer audiology master’s degrees and there are 14 courses to choose from among those institutions, highlighting the various options for specialisation within the subject. Entry requirements typically include a relevant undergraduate degree in a relevant scientific subject area. Master’s courses are typically one year full-time or two years part-time study.

What to Expect

An audiology masters programme offers a combination of theoretical study and practical work. Students cover topics such as auditory anatomy, hearing assessment and rehabilitation strategies, study through lectures, workshops and guided tutorials, and take part in clinical placements and practical learning experiences.

Assessment methods often include essays, presentations, case studies, practical skills assessments, clinical placements and reflective practice. Courses are accredited by bodies like the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring that programmes meet high professional standards, providing graduates with recognised and regulated qualifications. Graduates are well-equipped for roles as audiologists, hearing healthcare professionals or researchers contributing to advancements in auditory health.
