Biomedical science is one of the largest and most versatile branches of modern science. It is primarily related to the health of the human body and its functions and includes the study of both healthy and diseased individuals, from the molecular level to complex physical systems.
A biomedical sciences MSc is an advanced degree which develops the knowledge and skills learnt at undergraduate level, taking a deeper look into topics like cell biology, immunology and molecular biology. There are seven such MSc courses in the UK, which have been designed for fully online attendance, ranging in duration from one to three years. This gives students the flexibility to study from anywhere they choose, andentry requirements typically include a strong undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences or a related field.
The programme, delivered online, makes use of the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE) to distribute course content, deliver tuition and submit and give feedback for assignments.
Students can expect a comprehensive curriculum, which requires a significant amount of self-directed study. Assessment methods include online examinations, assignments and research projects and students will be able to communicate with their academic mentors and peers virtually, through video discussions, emails and online tutorials.
Gaining an MSc in biomedical science requires the submission of a long-form dissertation or academic report, requiring a period of research. This project represents an opportunity to contribute research to the wider field of biomedical science and can form the basis of further academic work at PhD level.
Graduates are well-prepared for roles in medical research, healthcare or the pharmaceutical industry; the programme aligns with the quality standards set by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), ensuring high professional standards in research and professional work.
