About Postgraduate Biotechnology

Biotechnology is an exciting and fast-growing interdisciplinary field, bringing together science, medicine and engineering to build innovative industrial and medical technologies. The creation of new biotech products or study of potentially useful biological processes forms the foundation of biotechnology.

Graduates of biotechnology can go on to work across industrial, private or academic research, clinical and tech settings, creating solutions in areas such as genetic treatment, future fuels, food production and more.

There are over 80 postgraduate programmes available in biotechnology across more than 40 UK universities, offering the opportunity to specialise in areas like molecular or pharmaceutical biotechnology, and bio-business.

What to expect

A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is typically required to apply for a postgraduate in biotechnology. This could include degrees in biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related discipline. Some courses may also accept students with degrees in chemistry or other closely related fields.

Some common modules that you might find in a postgraduate biotechnology curriculum include advanced molecular biology, bioprocessing and biomanufacturing, genetic engineering and synthetic biology, advanced cell biology and advanced analytical technologies for example.

A postgraduate qualification in biotechnology can open up a range of career opportunities in various sectors including biotechnologist, bioprocess engineer, bioinformatics specialist, pharmaceutical research scientist among other roles.
