About Postgraduate Cardiology

Cardiology is the branch of medicine that focusses on the study and treatment of the heart and circulatory system. Cardiologists diagnose and manage conditions, using various medical interventions and procedures to promote heart health and address cardiovascular issues.

Studying an MSc in cardiology usually requires a minimum of an upper second-class (2:1) bachelor's degree in a scientific or medical discipline from a UK university or overseas equivalent qualification. It is a specialised course and there are six universities in the UK which offer MSc degree programmes. These are typically one year in duration and can often be studied for two years on a part-time basis.

What to Expect

Students develop an in-depth understanding of molecular and cellular cardiovascular science, animal models of cardiovascular disease, microvascular biology and the functioning of the heart. Additionally, they will gain plenty of experience in a laboratory environment, learning advanced research methods and an introduction to data analysis and statistics. Research skills are a key part of the course, including awareness of research integrity, so that students may contribute to advancements in cardiovascular science with their work.

Assessment involves a lot of supervised laboratory work, written reports and formal examinations. Courses are accredited by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and graduates often find meaningful employment in hospital cardiology departments, research centres and pharmaceutical companies.
