About Postgraduate Ceramics Arts and Crafts

Ceramics arts and crafts is an extremely hands-on subject, which involves the exploration of ceramic design and artistry through experimentation with a wide selection of materials and methods. Students will build a diversity of skills and cultivate their own style and ideas as a sculptural ceramicist, utilising different mediums, methods and technologies to express themselves as fully as possible.

Entry onto an MA course requires a good honours degree at undergraduate level and specifically requires the submission of a portfolio of work, allowing the university admissions staff to see what type of work you have been doing and what kinds of skills you’ve developed.

You’ll find eight universities offering this creative postgraduate course, which is usually studied for one year full-time, or for two years part-time.

What to Expect

A ceramics MA course is typically project-led and studio-based, supporting a wide range of ceramic techniques, including historical, traditional and contemporary practices. You can expect to develop authorship of advanced studio work, through rigorous research and analysis of contemporary ceramic techniques and movements, while reflecting on your own creative process to evolve your practice and develop your own style.

You’ll learn through lectures, tutorials, workshops and studio sessions and once graduated, you’ll be well prepared to work as an independent ceramic artist, designer or educator. You’ll be well versed in research techniques and will be ready to contribute to the rich tradition and contemporary practices of ceramic arts.
