Chemistry is a broad field of science which looks at the properties of matter and how they interact on a molecular level. It is a hugely important field of science and underpins industry, medicine, engineering and many other essential aspects of society. An MSc in chemical engineering provides a deeper journey into the understanding of chemical processes than at undergraduate level. The course is typically studied over one year, although there are part-time options which can be completed in two or more years.
To gain admission, applicants are usually required to hold a strong undergraduate degree in chemistry or a closely related subject such as biochemistry or chemical physics. There are 20 universities in the UK offering this course and 40 courses offered overall, highlighting the subject’s potential for specialisms, in areas such as petroleum process or fuel cell engineering.
You can expect to learn through a combination of lectures, workshops, self-directed study and a significant amount of time spent in laboratory environments. You’ll learn to use advanced chemistry equipment in experimental settings and how to analyse data, interpret findings and present results in the form of written laboratory reports as well as oral presentations.
You’ll cover topics such as process engineering, materials science, transport design, advanced thermodynamics and sustainability. Assessment methods include coursework, exams and a significant research project which often acts as the equivalent of a dissertation. The course is likely to be accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and graduates often find employment in sectors like pharmaceuticals, energy or environmental consultancy.
