About Postgraduate Chemistry

Chemistry is a scientific discipline that explores the interactions between atoms and molecules, looking for a deeper understanding about the behaviour of, and transformation of matter. Chemistry plays a fundamental role in understanding the natural world, from the molecular basis of life to industrial processes and materials.

The programme allows students to build on the knowledge gained at undergraduate level and includes opportunities for specialisation in areas of interest. It is an ideal platform from which to get into research degrees or work in industry. Admission usually requires a strong undergraduate degree in chemistry or a closely related field like biochemistry or chemical physics. Courses are widespread in the UK, with more than 110 different courses available to study at this level.

What to Expect

Students can expect to study organic, inorganic and physical chemistry, engaging in weekly laboratory work, conducting a wide range of experiments to test technical skills, data collection and analysis abilities, and learn how to write scientific reports. The programme often includes opportunities for specialisation in areas such as medicinal chemistry or materials science and assessment methods include practical skills assessments, written exams and research-based dissertations.

Graduates are prepared for roles as chemists, researchers and educators, contributing to advancements in scientific knowledge through structured research work in areas of industry, pharmaceuticals or materials science. A master’s degree is also the ideal steppingstone to PhD or doctoral study. Courses are accredited by bodies like the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which ensures that the programme meets rigorous scientific standards.
