About Postgraduate Children's Nursing

Children’s nursing is a specialised area, dedicated to providing care and support to individuals ranging from newly born children to adolescents. It’s a broad field of care that could see you working on everything from childbirth to the treatment of disease, support for genetic conditions or acute trauma.

Children’s nurses are central to the function of children’s hospitals but may also work in hospices and other care facilities, as well as in the community.

There are over 30 different postgraduate programmes in children’s nursing to choose from across more than 20 UK universities, ranging from short postgraduate qualifications to full master’s degrees.

What to expect

Entry requirements vary significantly depending on the type of course you are interested in. You will usually need some recent relevant work experience and a related or unrelated undergraduate degree.

The topics covered will varies depending on the university and the specific course, but you will study a range of theoretical and practical modules covering key principles and practices in children’s nursing. This might include acute care, diagnostics, and treatment, long-term care, recovery, and rehabilitation, leading and managing in healthcare practice, evidence-based practice and nursing research and child and young person care with complex needs.

On graduating, students tend to continue their healthcare career in roles such as research nurse, nurse consultant, nurse educator, children’s nurse or specialist nurse.
