About Postgraduate Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is a branch of engineering that relates to the design, creation and maintenance of the structures which form the foundation of our society. From buildings to bridges, energy supply and water networks, civil engineers are needed across a wide variety of sectors.

Civil engineers will find career options across several industries, most notably construction, utilities and industry of various types. Graduates may work with architectural or construction firms or can move into civil engineering research.

There are over 200 postgraduate civil engineering degrees on offer across more than 60 UK universities, offering students the chance to further specialise in areas like urban design, environment and engineering, or construction management.

What to expect

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field is typically required. Some universities may accept applicants with degrees in closely related disciplines, such as structural engineering, environmental engineering, or construction management.

Postgraduate courses in civil engineering are designed to provide advanced knowledge and specialised skills in various areas of civil engineering. The specific topics covered will differ from course to course but common topics that are often taught include advanced structural analysis, advanced concrete and steel design, advanced geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, structural dynamics and earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, construction management and risk and reliability for example.

A postgraduate qualification in civil engineering will open up a range of job opportunities such as becoming a structural engineer, environmental engineer, water resources engineer, project manager, construction manager or an urban planner among others.
