About Postgraduate Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychology is a specialised branch of psychology which focuses on providing therapeutic treatment to patients who are suffering from mental illnesses, psychological conditions or other issues in their life.

Using talking therapies and other techniques, clinical psychologists stand out due to their extensive professional and academic expertise, often specialising in certain techniques or researching new ones.

There are over 100 clinical psychology master’s degrees to choose from across almost 70 universities in the UK, including in-depth taught master’s or doctoral research qualifications.

What to expect

You’ll need a postgraduate qualification to become a clinical psychiatrist that is accredited by the British Psychology Society (BPS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). To be accepted onto a course, you’ll typically need an undergraduate degree in psychology or a related subject. You might also be asked to show some relevant work experience.

Content will vary considerably depending on your areas of interest but most courses will cover clinical assessment, research methods and professional practice.

Once qualified, graduates usually pursue a career in the field of mental health such as a clinical psychologist, forensic psychologist or a marriage and family therapist.
