Clinical psychology, is a practice-oriented branch of psychology, that integrates theoretical knowledge with real-world applications to gain a deeper understanding of human thoughts and behaviours. Clinical psychologists engage in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses, catering to individuals of diverse ages and backgrounds.
To pursue a MSc in clinical psychology, you’ll typically need a second-class honours undergraduate degree in psychology or a relevant field. Additionally, a period of practical experience such as working in healthcare settings or engaging in clinical research with direct patient contact, is often a prerequisite for selection.
Clinical psychology is a popular course, and there are 65 available MSc courses at 58 different universities in the UK.
Typically, a clinical psychology MSc will have a duration of one year with full-time attendance, and two to three years if you’re studying part time. Specific modules vary among universities; however, many curriculums are tailored to prepare graduates for roles within the National Health Service (NHS).
Core topics often include models of intervention, advanced research methodologies and applied clinical practice. The programme adheres to the standards set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are accredited by the British Psychological Society, enabling you to attain chartered status after graduation and embark on your professional practice.
A clinical psychology MSc also opens the door to a diverse range of PhD and research related roles in academia or healthcare.
