About Postgraduate Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychology is a branch of psychology focused on assessing and treating mental and emotional disorders in people of all ages and backgrounds. Clinical psychologists work across diverse settings such as hospitals, mental health clinics and private practices, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care services. They address a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma and addiction, using various therapeutic approaches to promote mental well-being and improve the quality of life for their clients.

Studying a clinical psychology master’s degree can significantly enhance career potential within the field. There are many types of master’s qualifications including MSc, MEd, PGDip, MRes and several more. These usually refer to the course's duration and academic level and indicate whether the curriculum is more research or practice oriented.

There are currently 60 universities in the UK offering a master’s degree in clinical psychology and many of them with built-in subject specialisms.

What to Expect

A master’s programme provides advanced training in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders. Students build on the foundation of knowledge and skills attained at undergraduate level, exploring therapeutic techniques, clinical communication skills and research methodologies. Certain courses require students to undergo therapy sessions personally, to gain a valuable perspective on the profession and to reflect on their own psychological health. Assessment methods include clinical placements, written assignments, supervised client work and research projects.

Graduates are well-prepared for roles as clinical psychologists, counsellors or mental health researchers and have their qualification accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), ensuring graduates adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards in clinical psychology.
