About Postgraduate Counselling Skills

Counselling is a therapeutic process by which a trained counsellor uses empathetic listening, effective communication and evidence-based techniques, in order to help clients explore their feelings, thoughts and behaviours. The goal is to foster self-awareness, facilitate personal growth and develop coping strategies for addressing life's difficulties. Counselling can address a wide range of issues, including mental health concerns, relationship issues and personal development. It provides a confidential and non-judgmental space for individuals to navigate challenges, improve mental well-being and work towards positive change.

Counselling is a highly effective and very important part of the UK’s allied health services and there is an abundance of opportunities to study at this level, with more than 80 master’s courses offered at over 50 institutions across the country.

What to Expect

The counselling master’s programme focusses on advanced counselling methods, therapeutic techniques and practical applications that include clinical placement and community outreach experiences. Students explore ethical considerations, understand professional practice regulations and often engage in periods of personal counselling themselves, as part of the education journey.

Courses are delivered in both full-time and part-time modes of attendance, and these can last anywhere from one to four years. Assessment methods include case studies, practical assessments and written assignments like essays and dissertations.

Graduates are prepared for roles as counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health practitioners, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities. This programme is validated by The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and aligns with the standards set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), to which graduates can become members.
