About Postgraduate Counselling Skills

Counselling is one of the most valued professions within the applied health services. It is used by many people in the UK every year, in schools, workplaces and both public and private healthcare settings. Trained counsellors help clients to overcome psychological issues, encouraging confidence and personal growth through one-to-one sessions where they engage in apathetic conversation and guided emotional awareness exercises.

A counselling PGDip programme focuses on advanced studies in counselling theories, techniques and practical applications. Applicants generally require a bachelor's degree with a minimum classification of 2:1 in any subject and a period of relevant clinical experience is usually preferred. It is a part-time course designed to provide professional training for people considering a career in counselling and the mental health profession, and there are 17 universities in the UK which offer it. The duration is typically two years, but can vary between one and three years, depending on course specifics.

What to Expect

You’ll develop advanced interpersonal skills, while learning an array of therapeutic methods, intervention strategies and ethical considerations. The course will also have a large component of supervised clinical practice and you can expect to be assessed through your performance in this placement as well as through presentations and written reports. You may also be required to undergo counselling as part of the learning experience, and this can give a valuable perspective on your work and personal life.

Counselling courses are validated by The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and align with the standards set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Once graduated, you’ll be able to apply for BACP membership and continue your professional practice, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities.
