About Postgraduate Counselling Skills

A Counselling MA programme provides comprehensive training in counselling theories, psychotherapeutic approaches and interpersonal skills. Students explore areas such as grief counselling, addiction therapy, existential counselling and many more. The role of a qualified counsellor is to guide their client through personal challenges which they are experiencing, through the medium of empathetic discussion. They help clients to open up, share their feelings and build coping strategies that encourage personal growth.

There are 21 counselling MA degrees available to study in the UK and these are generally aimed at students holding an undergraduate degree in any subject, with minimum second class (2:1) or equivalent. Practical experience is also highly valued and in addition to full-time attendance, there are part-time study options which allow students to continue with their professional work, while gaining their MA.

What to Expect

The counselling MA course offers a strong focus on high-quality research and clinical skills training. It provides students with an opportunity to critically and creatively evaluate current theory and practice issues, while developing their own clinical skills. Courses in the UK are accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), to which students may apply for membership after completing their degree.

Graduates are well-equipped for roles as counsellors, therapists and mental health advocates, contributing to the mental and emotional well-being of individuals. This programme is validated by The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring graduates meet ethical and professional standards in counselling practice.
