About Postgraduate Dance

Dance is one of the most fundamental human behaviours. It represents movement, performance, communication and storytelling all at once; studying it at PhD level gives you an opportunity to conduct a piece of original research into a specific area of this ubiquitous discipline. You could look at the artistic and theoretical aspects of dance, choreography and performance, or you could delve into the cultural context and dance history of the craft.

An upper second-class honours degree is usually asked for; however, many universities also consider applicants with significant professional experience in dance. There are four universities in the UK which offer dance as a PhD and to gain entry, you’ll be required to submit a proposal for your own research programme, which will be considered by your chosen university’s academic tutors and form the basis of your studies.

What to Expect

The programme typically lasts between three and six years, depending on whether you choose to study it on a full-time or part-time basis. It is usually very physical, with a mixture of practical workshops, movement studies, dance theory courses and research projects. A PhD in dance caters to both artistic and theoretical dimensions and can be used in a wide range of applications, from theory and performance to cinema and filmmaking, therapeutic studies, theatre and drama, and pedagogy.

Graduates are equipped for vibrant careers as professional dancers, choreographers, educators or dance researchers, contributing to the wider world of dance.
