About Postgraduate Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is a core part of the medical field of dentistry, which relates specifically to maintaining good oral health through maintenance of the gums, cleaning of the teeth and promoting good every day oral hygiene practices. Dental hygienists are important partners to dentists, usually working in hospitals and dental clinics.

There are more than eight postgraduate courses to choose from at six different UK universities.

What to expect

Postgraduate dental hygiene courses offer students the chance to build practical and theoretical expertise as well as conduct impactful research towards improved industry practices. Applicants are usually required to have an undergraduate degree in a relevant science subject such as biology, nutrition or health science.

Content will vary from course to course but topics such as clinical nutrition, public heath, research methods and food science will be covered. Courses range from one to four years, depending on a student’s career objectives.

Due to the highly vocational nature of the subject, most graduates go onto become dental hygienists or work in academia either in research or teaching.
