About Postgraduate Embryology

Embryology is a specialist medical subject dedicated to understanding and guiding the development of embryos, from fertilisation until the point of birth. Postgraduate students and practitioners of embryology focus on providing fertility treatments to patients, monitoring embryo health and conducting research into reproductive processes.

There are currently four universities in the UK offering this highly specialised subject with over seven different courses to choose from including MScs and PGDips.

What to expect

To be considered for a postgraduate course in this area, you’ll typically need an undergraduate degree in a related field such as biology, biomedicine or biochemistry.

Postgraduate students of embryology will build on their medical background to develop specialised knowledge and skills, with the option of additionally studying relevant topics such as assisted conception or reproduction technology.

Some different career paths associated with this area include embryologist, reproductive medicine specialist, research scientist or academic.
