About Postgraduate Health Economics

The study of health economics examines the allocation of resources by applying economic principles to the healthcare sector. Health economists look at how factors like cost, accessibility and quality influence healthcare services, aiming to optimise health outcomes within budget limitations.

Students enrolled on a MSc programme study economic principles, data analysis methods and health care evaluations, learning through a combination of practical case studies, lectures, problem-solving workshops and research projects. Entry requirements typically include a strong undergraduate degree in economics, public health or a related field. There are 16 universities in the UK which offer the MSc course in health economics, which can either be studied in a year with full-time attendance or over two years with part-time attendance.

What to Expect

Students can expect a well-rounded education which provides superb preparation for professional roles as health economists, policy analysts and consultants. In this programme, students acquire various tools and methods used by health economists and policy analysts, including advanced numerical skills, financial model making, data interpretation and critical reasoning. Assessment methods can be varied, but typically include written essays, presentations, exams and a dissertation on a topic of the student’s own choosing.

Most courses include a period of work placement, where students will gain first-hand experience in a professional environment, bringing the confidence needed to apply their skills in future careers roles and make intelligent decisions. Graduates are well-prepared to take on meaningful job roles and contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery.
