Studying history at postgraduate level gives you an opportunity to delve deeper into the subject than is possible at undergraduate level. You’ll be able to choose a narrower field of study and go further into your study of it. It’s ideal for those interested in learning about past events and how they relate to the world today, by exploring historical periods, events and methodologies.
It’s a subject which carries a strong research component and it’s also a degree which can readily be studied via distance learning. In fact, there are 15 history MA courses available in the UK, with seven universities from which to study them. Typical entry requirements include an upper second-class honours (2:1) degree in history or a related field.
Expect to do a lot of reading, researching and writing. You’ll be examining different types of historical source documents, cross referencing and working towards writing a long-form dissertation on a topic of your choosing, under the supervision of an academic tutor. You’ll have opportunities to learn advanced research skills, undergo language training, palaeography ,and methods training in social science.
MA courses are typically one-year full time, or two years part time. The part-time distance learning study mode allows you to continue living and working as normal and complete your postgraduate degree in your personal time if you wish. Once graduated, you’ll be equipped with advanced research and analytical skills, ready for roles in academia, research or cultural institutions, contributing to a deeper understanding of the past and how it relates to the future.
