About Postgraduate Human Physiology

The study of human physiology deals with how the human body functions and its underlying mechanisms. It investigates the role of organs, tissues and systems in maintaining health and adapting to environmental changes. At master’s level, students will build on the foundational knowledge gained during their undergraduate degree, looking in-depth into the body’s nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Human physiology has many practical applications, from medicine and healthcare to sports and exercise science. Admission to master's degree study usually requires a UK honours degree with a minimum 2:2 classification in physiology, biological or biomedical science. It is a popular and versatile course, with more than 30 programmes offered throughout the UK.

What to Expect

You can expect to study for one year full-time or for two to three years if you choose part-time attendance. Many courses have built-in specialisms like molecular biology, clinical practices or nutrition and diet, so course content can vary significantly between programmes.

Generally, you’ll be assessed though a combination of written exams, laboratory reports, presentations and supervised practice, with a final dissertation to end the year, written on a subject of your choosing. Graduates are well-equipped for roles as physiologists, healthcare researchers or educators, contributing to advancements in understanding human health and body function.
