About Postgraduate Journalism

The profession of journalism involves the sourcing, verifying and disseminating news and information to the public through various media channels such as newspapers, magazines, TV and online publications. Journalists play a crucial role in investigating and reporting on events and issues around the world, serving as a bridge between information sources and the public and contributing to an informed and engaged society.

Entry requirements to a journalism master’s course usually include a minimum of a 2:2 bachelor’s degree, in subject which required strong written communication, along with some evidence of journalism experience. Courses are normally one year in duration and can often be studied part-time over two years. It is a popular and ever-relevant course, offered by more than 50 universities in the UK. There are more than 110 journalism courses overall and you’ll have options to specialise right from the start, in areas like sports broadcast, social justice or investigative journalism.

What to Expect

A master’s degree in journalism offers advanced training in media, journalism ethics and multimedia storytelling. You can expect a lot of self-directed work, since journalism is very narrative-oriented and requires a personal style or creativity of writing. Developing your own style within the type of content you wish to produce will be a big focus during your time studying, as well as learning all the necessary rules and regulations. Assessment for the master’s degree includes practical assignments, research projects and a final dissertation which will be a long-form, highly researched piece of writing into a topic of your choosing.

Once graduated, you’ll have a good idea about the type of stories you want to cover and will be well equipped for working in a variety of journalism roles in newsrooms, media production companies or online platforms around the world.
