Library studies is an applied postgraduate subject that encompasses several disciplines, including archive and information studies, records management, library science and librarianship.
Librarians and record managers enable the smooth function of various stores of information, from government facilities to national archives, academic collections and museums.
There are around 19 different postgraduate programmes across library and information studies at nine UK universities. Taught and research degrees are available, depending on your interests.
Postgraduate students develop specialised knowledge and industry-specific skills that will help them succeed and progress in their careers. For example, you might focus on a type of document or archive in your field. You’ll usually need an undergraduate degree in any subject to be considered. Some courses require prior relevant work experience in a library or archive.
Completing a postgraduate qualification will open opportunities in policy and management roles at national libraries, major special collections libraries and archives. It could also prove useful in other sectors such as government information services, health and social care organisations, charities, and court services amongst others.
