About Postgraduate Marine Biology

Marine Biology Masters is the study of life and the diverse ecosystems in the world’s oceans and other saltwater environments such as estuaries and wetlands. The subject includes topics such as marine ecology, oceanography and conservation and aims to foster a deeper understanding of the interconnected systems which marine environments are home to, and which society relies upon.

It is a scientific field and entry to a master’s course usually requires a strong undergraduate degree in biology, ecology or a related subject. Courses are typically one year of full-time study or two to three years part-time. There are eight universities in the UK which offer marine biology master’s courses and eighteen different courses overall, with various specialisms available.

What to Expect

A marine biology master’s degree provides advanced studies in marine science, covering topics such as marine ecology, oceanography and conservation. Assessment methods usually include a lot of fieldwork, laboratory projects and a final research dissertation.

You can expect to be located somewhere near the coast, since fieldwork requires regular access to saltwater environments and you’ll learn how to measure and analyse a diversity of ecological data, represent this information visually, write scientific reports on your findings and present your research to both scientists and non-scientists. Graduates are well-equipped for roles as marine biologists, researchers or environmental consultants, contributing to the understanding and preservation of marine ecosystems in the UK and around the world.
