About Postgraduate Medical Radiology

Medical radiology is a health specialism dedicated to the use of various imaging techniques to screen for, diagnose and even treat various diseases and conditions.

Medical radiologists combine medical expertise with technical knowledge across areas including ultrasound, x-ray, MRI, CT and PET. The core skills of radiologists include being able to produce and interpret medical imagery, and in some cases perform interventions such as biopsies. They’re essential to many treatments delivered in hospitals and clinics, as well as private and academic medical research.

There are more than 20 postgraduate programmes in this specialism across UK universities, including courses that focus on areas such as ultrasound or radiotherapy.

What to expect

Postgraduate courses are often designed for medical professionals wanting to specialise and so you will often need a health care degree and be working in a medical setting. You may already be a radiographer and want to specialise.

Topics covered will vary from course to course but some of the modules you may cover include professional practice, technology and physics and oncology. Courses usually involve some work-based learning so you’ll either need to work somewhere that is willing to facilitate that or find a separate placement.

Aside from enhancing your radiography career, you might also be interested in other roles such as a radiation oncologist or consider going into research at a university, hospital or research institution.
