Microbiologists play a vital role in safeguarding public health.
Entry requirements to a microbiology MSc can vary, based on the course structure, however they typically include a strong undergraduate degree in a medical or biological science related field and are often included as part of medical or veterinary elective course options. A master's in microbiology in the UK will also equip students further for PhD study or for a career in microbiology.
You can expect to gain a hands-on, immersive experience in high-tech facilities, working alongside leading academics. Students explore topics such as medical microbiology, microbial taxonomy, bioinformatics and molecular biology. Assessment methods typically include a large quantity of laboratory work, with written reports, research projects and formal examinations. Courses are generally studied for one year with full-time attendance but can also be completed over two to three years with part-time learning.
