Musical theatre is a branch of the dramatic arts dedicated to developing performers who can create and deliver engaging works, combining music, singing, acting and dance. It’s a form of entertainment that is centuries old and has evolved over time to incorporate a wide range of styles and themes. It’s an exciting and fun subject that often requires great creativity, passion and perseverance.
Usually very practical in nature, students train together under the guidance of industry professionals to further develop their skills and networks within the industry to access a range of career opportunities.
You can currently choose from 13 different UK universities, offering more than 18 courses.
You’ll typically need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject like music, theatre or performing arts. Most universities also require you to audition for a place and you may be asked to submit a portfolio of your work. It’s worth doing some research into the exact requirements before applying for a particular course as competition is fierce.
Specific modules will vary depending on the university and type of course you go for, but content is likely to include musical theatre history, performance, production, writing and analysis.
