Occupational therapy is a type of allied health science, focussed on helping individuals to participate in daily activities to their fullest potential, following a period of injury, illness or while overcoming a disability. Occupational therapists work closely with clients of all ages, helping them overcome physical, mental and social barriers to live independent and satisfying lives.
Pursuing a master's degree in occupational therapy in the UK typically requires an undergraduate degree in a related health or behavioural science field. Many programmes also prefer candidates to have accrued relevant practical experience, reflecting the hands-on nature of the profession.
Occupational therapy is a dynamic and evolving facet of the healthcare system, constantly integrating new research and practices to better address patient needs. There are more than 30 master’s programmes in occupational therapy throughout the UK.
Master's programmes in occupational therapy give you an opportunity to build on your undergraduate education, combining theoretical learning with extensive practical application. You will study advanced human anatomy and psychology, therapeutic techniques and how to create and implement treatment plans tailored to individual needs. A significant emphasis is placed on clinical placements, providing students with experience in real-world settings, working with diverse populations, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions or disabilities.
Courses are designed to cultivate critical thinking, enhance research abilities and a holistic approach to healthcare. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a key component, as you will often work alongside professionals in fields like psychology, physiotherapy and social work.
Upon completion, graduates are expected to meet the standards set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Registration is mandatory to practise professionally in the UK.
