About Postgraduate Philosophy

Philosophy considers many of the most fundamental questions about existence. It is the study of knowledge, reason, mind and language, and is of fundamental importance to the way we understand the world. Philosophers explore abstract concepts and seek to understand the nature of reality and human experience, creating academic frameworks through which to engage with life’s deepest questions.

A philosophy distance learning master's programme offers a flexible approach to exploring philosophical education. It can be studied from anywhere in the world and gives an opportunity for students to organise their work or personal commitments around studying for a master’s degree. There are more than 150 such courses available in the UK and entry requirements typically include an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate UK honours degree, preferably in philosophy or a similar subject.

What to Expect

Students delve into areas such as metaphysics, critical thinking, ethical reasoning and epistemology, among many others. There are 60 universities in the UK which offer this course, and this results in a lot of options for specialisation. You could study contemporary, European, political, human rights or social philosophy, just to name a few.

The programme, designed for remote study, includes online seminars, discussions and a major research project which results in a written dissertation that you’ll complete under supervision of an academic tutor. Expect a lot of self-guided learning and research. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia or research; philosophy has a lot of relevance to other academic fields such as law, politics, physics and history.
