About Postgraduate Physical Education

A master's degree in physical education enables students to engage with sports and exercise science, from the perspective of coaching, teamwork, management and education. Commonly covered topics at master’s degree level include sports psychology, biomechanics and curriculum development.

Entry requirements usually include a relevant undergraduate degree in physical education, sports science, physical performance or a related field. There are ten universities in the UK which offer this course and 12 courses overall, reflecting the built-in specialisms which many courses include, such as health and well-being, pedagogy and sport leadership. There are both full-time courses and part-time courses available, with a duration of one and two years respectively.

What to Expect

Students can expect a diverse curriculum which draws on parallel disciplines like psychology, biology, management, teaching and policymaking. Students learn to build a curriculum of their own and adapt the level and complexity of information to a variety of audiences from school pupils to elite athletes. Advances in communication skills are developed and assessment methods usually include coursework, practical assignments and a final research project which is on a topic of their choosing.

Graduates are prepared for roles as physical education instructors, sports administrators or sports scientists, contributing to the promotion of health and well-being through physical activity.
