Psychotherapy refers to a variety of treatments which help people to identify and overcome difficult thought patterns, troubling emotions and compulsive behaviours. It involves entirely verbal communication and interaction, where a professional psychotherapist makes a series of discussion-based interventions to help a person or group of people to engage with themselves and their psychological needs.
Typical UK entry requirements include an upper second-class honours (2:1) degree in a psychology related field. Some programmes may consider applicants with degrees in other disciplines, along with relevant work experience. In London, there are eight universities which offer psychotherapy courses and 20 courses to choose from. These courses include various options for postgraduate specialisms such as counselling and psychotherapy or humanistic psychotherapy.
At master’s level, you can expect to cover various psychotherapeutic approaches, professional ethics and communication skills, while gaining practical experience through supervised clinical placements. You’ll learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, discussions and self-directed study; assessment can take many forms including written assignments, presentations and supervised placement performance.
You can expect courses to have a duration of two years full-time, or three to five years part-time, which allows you to keep working as a therapy professional in London while gaining a master’s degree. Once you complete the course, you’ll be ready to take on advanced roles as a psychotherapist, counsellor or mental health practitioner, contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities. You may apply to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) for professional accreditation.
