Public Administration involves managing and implementing government policies and programmes. It includes a lot of organisational work, from planning, decision-making and coordination of public resources to address societal needs and work with communities. Public administrators work in government agencies, contributing to the effective delivery of public services around the country.
Studying a public administration master’s programme in England includes an in-depth exploration of policy analysis, public finance and governance strategies. Entry requirements typically include a solid undergraduate degree in political science, management or a relevant field. There are more than 70 such courses within England, delivered by more than 30 universities and many offer options for specialisation in areas such as public affairs, media, economics or international policy.
Typically, a public administration master's programme in England requires a year of full-time study to complete, however there are two-year part-time options as well, for those who wish to continue working as they study. You can expect to engage with practical case studies, self-directed learning, internships and a final dissertation or research project. Assessment methods typically include essays, written exams, group projects and presentations.
Many courses are accredited by bodies like the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), which ensures that the programme meets professional management standards. Graduates are well-equipped for roles in public service, government agencies or non-profit organisations, contributing to effective and ethical governance.
