About Postgraduate Risk Management

Risk management aims to achieve organisational goals by identifying, assessing and mitigating potential risks and uncertainties. It involves a lot of data analysis, statistics and strategy building and is relevant to just about every business and organisation in the world. Effective risk management can help businesses overcome adverse situations, optimise their strategies and readily adapt to change.

Risk management is a technical and data-driven subject and entry requirements for a master’s course usually include a relevant undergraduate degree in business, finance or a related STEM subject area. There are more than 60 master’s degrees available in the UK and these are typically studied over the course of one year full-time or two years part-time.

What to Expect

Students study risk assessment methodologies, statistical modelling, financial risk management and regulatory compliance, learning to use a variety of technologies and digital tools to make predictions and calculate uncertainties which form the basis for short and long-term strategy building. These skills can be applied to sectors as diverse as healthcare, aviation, law, energy, engineering and insurance. Assessment methods often include written examinations, coursework, essays and a final dissertation project.

Graduates are well-prepared for roles as risk managers, analysts and consultants, contributing to strategic decision-making processes within organisations globally. Many courses are recognised by the Chartered Insurance Institute, the world’s leading professional body for insurance and financial services.
