About Postgraduate Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a field of healthcare which helps those with communication difficulties to improve pronunciation and overcome speech impediments by strengthening the muscles used in verbal expression, developing psychological tools to aid communication.

Speech therapists work with people of all ages, from children with developmental delays to adults recovering from neurological conditions. It is an accredited profession whose qualification is approved in the UK by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

Postgraduate speech therapy students in the UK require a 2:1 undergraduate honours degree (or international equivalent) and usually are expected to have completed relevant work experience in speech and language therapy.

What to expect

Studying speech therapy at postgraduate level provides a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with clinical training. You’ll explore the anatomy and physiology of speech and language in detail, alongside developing your understanding of the psychological and social aspects of communication which were studied at undergraduate level.

The postgraduate curriculum equips students with evidence-based practices, diagnostic techniques, and intervention strategies, and the course includes a clinical placement component where you’ll be working with clients under supervision.
