About Postgraduate Surgery

Surgeons work at the cutting edge of modern medicine, performing thousands of different types of procedures and operations, from the smallest intervention to the most critical life-saving surgeries.

It’s a job that holds a great deal of responsibility and in order to enrol on a surgery postgraduate course, the first step is to get into medical school, where you’ll complete an undergraduate degree in medicine lasting five to six years. After this, you’ll join a paid two-year foundation programme where you’ll work in six placements in different settings. Only after this can you begin your surgical training.

There are over 70 surgery courses in the UK, available at over 30 universities and about 2,571 general surgeons working in the NHS in England.

What to Expect

A postgraduate degree in surgery delves into advanced medical training, focusing on surgical techniques, patient care and clinical decision-making. Admission is highly competitive, with emphasis on outstanding academic performance and a demonstrated commitment to surgical practice. You’ll undergo comprehensive training, with the potential to specialise in a particular area of surgery, such as orthopaedics, cardiovascular or neurosurgery.

You can expect a high workload and a combination of theory and practical study. After your training is complete, you can apply for accreditation by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) which is the UK governing body that ensures stringent professional standards.
