About Postgraduate Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary medicine is a medical speciality that, unlike many others, deals exclusively with diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and other conditions among animals. Veterinarians are experts in a wide range of animals, from their physiology to their diet, the diseases that affect them, anaesthesia and surgical procedures.

Postgraduate veterinary medicine students will build on their existing knowledge and skills, preparing for a successful career in a highly competitive field. It’s also possible to conduct research through a postgraduate degree, driving the creation of new methods and technology.

There are over 50 postgraduate veterinary medicine courses available at more than 10 universities in the UK.

What to expect

Postgraduate courses offer students a chance to specialise in specific animals or medical areas like cardiology. You’ll usually need a first or second class honours degree in veterinary medicine or veterinary science although some institutions will also accept biological science or human medicine. Modules vary widely depending on the specialist area studied.

Gaining a postgraduate qualification in veterinary medicine could help advance your career. By advancing your knowledge and skills you could work in academia, research or a specialised clinical practice such as surgery or oncology. It can also be a rewarding experience both personally and professionally.
