Social workers are some of the UK’s most fundamental public healthcare professionals, often the first point of contact for people that need extra help and guidance due to factors such as poverty, inequality and mental health challenges.
The PGDip course is ideal for those who have completed an undergraduate degree in a different subject area but wish to transition to a postgraduate level qualification in social care. Having a significant period of relevant experience and being able to show a commitment to working in social welfare is typically enough to qualify for enrolment.
There are 10 universities in the UK which offer social work (PGDIP) qualifications, and they offer a route to professional accreditation in two years.
The PGDip in social work covers a range of topics including social work theories, ethical practice, legal frameworks, and practical skills needed for effective intervention. The programme emphasises the development of critical thinking and interpersonal skills essential for social work practice. Most courses include two placements in different social work settings, providing hands-on supervised experience where you’ll be able to put theoretical work to practical use.
PGDip courses are approved by Social Work England (SWE), the main governing body for legal professional work. Upon graduation, you’ll be able to register as one of more than 90,000 active members and begin your professional practice.
