Sports journalism is an exciting branch of journalism that focuses on analysing, reporting or broadcasting sporting events and news. This could relate to professional sports at a domestic or international level, as well as amateur sports and industry developments.
There are currently nine universities in the UK offering more than 10 different courses including postgraduate diplomas and MA degrees.
You’ll normally need an undergraduate degree to be considered. Some universities require a related subject, others will accept a degree in any field.
Sports journalism postgraduate courses will develop advanced, industry-specific skills and build a deep understanding of the sporting sector. Learning to source, gather and issue sporting content across written, audio and video platforms will prepare you for a sought-after career in print, web or broadcast journalism.
Typical modules covered include critical issues in journalism, international reporting and advanced research methods. Some courses are accredited by professional organisations such as the Professional Publishers Association and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and may offer the opportunity to take the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Diploma in Journalism, a widely recognised qualification throughout the media.
