The University of Dundee is one of the UK’s leading universities and is placed in the top 30 in the 2022 Whatuni Student Choice Awards, as well as being rated 58th in the UK according to Complete University Guide 2024.
Dundee was established in 1881 and has built a strong reputation for teaching and research quality across a range of academic and professional disciplines. The university is divided into ten schools, each with its own specialisms and range of postgraduate programmes. Dundee leads UK universities in creative writing, as well as placing in the top 5 for subjects like education, medicine, biomedical science and forensic science (Complete University Guide, 2022).
Dundee, the sunniest city in Scotland, is found on the Tay estuary, just a short way north of Edinburgh. It’s a popular student city due to its central location in Scotland and vibrant culture, with a dynamic food and entertainment scene along with a rich history for students to explore in-between their studies.
Dundee offers its students excellent graduate prospects, with its employment-oriented courses, skilled staff and career support earning it first place in Scotland when it comes to graduates finding skilled employment (Graduate Outcomes Survey, 2020). A wide range of scholarships and bursaries are available for postgraduate students to further help them achieve their academic and professional potentials.
Postgraduate students at Dundee are able to select from a wide range of taught and research study options. The university offers courses across dozens of subjects and professional areas.
Students looking for a taught master’s level qualification will be able to access PG Certificates, PG Diplomas and a range of master’s degree qualifications including MA, MSc, MLitt, MFA and MEd.
Research students at Dundee benefit from studying under and working with some of the world’s leading researchers and academics. The research community at Dundee is focused on delivering impactful work that benefits society and operates at the edge of their respective fields.
Research students at Dundee will be supported by subject experts throughout their studies, along with continued access to mentoring, career support services and skills training opportunities. A dedicated Doctoral Academy at the university works closely with the students’ association and Dundee’s schools to ensure that research students get everything they need to excel.
Research students can choose from PhD, MPhil and MRes degree types, while professional doctorates include the likes of DHSci, DEdPsy, DProf and more.
Entry onto a postgraduate course at Dundee is subject to meeting the academic criteria set out for the specified course. Non-academic criteria such as professional experience and English language ability may also apply.
Entry requirements will vary according to the course subject area and level of study being applied to.
For example, applicants to the MSc in Developmental Psychology will need to have an undergraduate honours degree in psychology or a similar subject, with a grade of 2:2 or more. Students from other academic backgrounds will also be considered in light of relevant work experience and a strong personal statement.
Students applying to the LLM in Environmental Law will need to have a 2:2 or higher grade in an honours undergraduate degree in law. Bachelor’s degrees in other subjects will be considered in light of relevant experience and a strong personal statement.
Applicants for the MLitt in Archives and Records Management will need an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and have paid or voluntary work in a professional archive environment for at least half a day a week. Prior professional experience is required.
Admissions criteria for courses can vary over time, so students are encouraged to check the requirements as set out on their chosen course’s webpage.
The University Dundee is a leading university when it comes to graduate prospects in the UK, having been rated 4th among its institutions for graduate entry into professional occupations according to the Graduate Outcomes Survey, 2020.
Postgraduate courses at Dundee are informed by the latest research, much of it from the university’s own scholars and lecturers. Students are able to complete professional skills modules, group projects and industrial placements across many of Dundee’s postgraduate programmes, setting them up for success from the day of their graduation.

The university manages an array of on-campus accommodation blocks, including residences like Heathfield. This block offers students access to anywhere on campus within five minutes walking and the city centre within ten. A 2022 comparethesupermarket.com survey found that Dundee was rated fourth best in the UK for graduates, making it the perfect place to complete advanced studies before a professional or academic career.
Some postgraduate students might prefer to live off campus while in Dundee and will be able to browse hundreds of private rentals across the city. The university is on hand to help, with support and advice around finding an appropriate rental available through the student association.
Despite being one of the cheapest places to live as a student across the UK (Oxford Royale, 2021), the university invests in a wide range of scholarships and bursaries to further help students meet the costs associated with study and remove any barriers to student success.

The Global Excellence scholarship, which is worth up to £6,000 per academic year for eligible international fee students who are completing a full-time postgraduate taught course on campus.
An alumni scholarship is also available to students at Dundee who have completed an undergraduate degree at the university prior to pursuing a postgraduate course. It offers between £1,500 and £3,000 to eligible students.
Subject- and school-specific scholarships are also available, such as the Discover Business at Dundee scholarship which offers £2,000 per year of study to students pursuing master’s degrees in subjects related to business and finance.
