Postgraduate Reviews of Courses at Plymouth Marjon University

Marjon is a small university which feels person centred and ethical. The staff are friendly and available. It is on the outskirts of Plymouth but has buses into town. There is some student accommodation on site and some in town. There is on site parking but you have to pay for it and there is not always space available when everyone is in. I haven't been stuck yet but it is always a possibility.

If you are studying medical subjects there are on sight clinics and it is close to the main hospital in the region where you may have placements. There are lots of sports facilities.

I am an older student so live off site, the provision of on site food and drink is not fantastic but is there if needed . There are a couple of large supermarkets within about 30 minutes walk or a short bus ride away.

There are also welcoming spaces in the university where you can use the Microwave or toaster and make hot drinks if needed. I put a small donation in the chaplaincy box for this as it feels like the right thing to do.

There are rooms with lovely sea and country side views . You will be a short distance from the seaside and the Devon countryside. I suspect the cost of living is cheaper in Plymouth than many parts of the UK. Plymouth is bidding to be the City of Culture and there are lots of things happening but you may have to look hard to find them,

Plymouth has a laid back quality of life which some people really like. It is also an area of deprivation so it is somewhere a student can make a positive difference if they wish to.

I have yet to have a negative experience at this university. They have been supportive of both academic studies and wellbeing throughout my time studying here. read full review
The best aspects are definitely the support offered and being able to have online lessons and lessons in Truro so don’t have to travel to Plymouth
Worst aspect probably being moved around to different rooms in the building so never 100% sure where we will be. read full review
The facilities and support you get are very good with lots of practicals giving you a chance to use equipment you wouldn’t otherwise. It’s a small unit compared to others but means you get to know lots of people on different courses as well as the lecturers really well.

The student union could be improved as there is only 1 bar on campus that is usually closed. With the uni not being near the centre of town student often have to get a bus or taxi into town to find things to do which can be expensive. More events at the bar and it being open more often could really improve living on campus.

There are lots of sports teams to get involved in which can be really good and a way to get to know people quickly read full review
Such a supportive place to study, as it is small you really feel a personal connection with your lecturers. However, due to the small size of the University, the facilities are relative and therefore there isn’t a huge amount. This has little impact on my studies due to me being a PGCE student and spending little time in the uni. read full review
I'm doing my course fully online and my experience has been brilliant.

I live a couple of hours away from the campus so I've done everything actually course-related remotely, but I've had the opportunity to visit the campus and I know I can access it and its facilities if I want or need to.

The structure and support offered by my course and its tutors is fantastic. It's designed with working professionals like myself in mind, so I am able to complete the modules at times that fit around my busy schedule. I was a little unsure how well it would suit me to begin with, but I have found it to be one of the best experiences of my life. My self-confidence has grown massively and it's ignited a desire in me to continue to study and learn.

I have no suggestions for improvement. My experience with Marjon has been wonderful. read full review
Very insightful, supportive lecturers, experts in their field.

The tutors on my course are all just fabulous. They go above and beyond for the students. This is my third degree and the tutors are without a doubt the most concerned for the wellbeing and progress of every single one of their students. read full review

The Best and Worst Aspects of My University Experience

One of the best aspects of my time at Marjon has been the incredible support and dedication from the lecturers. They are not only experts in their fields but also kind and approachable, always willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed. Whether it’s through detailed feedback, extra office hours, or even just their willingness to listen, they’ve created an environment where learning feels both challenging and rewarding.

The campus facilities are another highlight. The swimming pool and gym are state-of-the-art, providing a perfect outlet for staying active and managing stress. The on-campus shop is incredibly convenient for picking up essentials, and the nap room is a unique and thoughtful addition, offering students a space to recharge during a busy day. These amenities make campus life enjoyable and contribute to a well-rounded experience.

However, there are several aspects that have been disappointing. One of the most notable issues is the lack of student events and a vibrant atmosphere in the Student Union. For a university community to thrive, it’s important to create opportunities for students to connect and build a sense of belonging, but this is sorely lacking. For students like me, who are on placements Monday to Friday as part of the PGCE program, it’s nearly impossible to join societies or engage in what little social life is available. This makes it difficult to feel part of the university community, and student life can feel isolating as a result.

Additionally, accessing help with financial aid and well-being services has been a challenge. While these resources exist, they are not always easy to navigate, and the process can be frustrating and time-consuming, especially during moments of need.

Overall, while Marjon shines in its academic support and excellent facilities, the lack of community-building events and the difficulty in accessing support services leave room for significant improvement. For postgraduate students with demanding schedules, these gaps are especially evident, and addressing them would greatly enhance the student experience. read full review
I really like the small feel of Marjon, as I am known by my tutors on a personal level which can not be had at a bigger University. Also, it is much easier to make friendships within your cohort due to the amount of time you spend together and how often you see one another about campus.
Student support at Marjon is also great, I know there is somewhere I can go should I need to and that the right help is available for me.
Marjon also has a brilliant selection of societies to choose from which I am so thankful for as this gives me something to attend with my peers. read full review
