Course Summary

In our data-driven economy, companies are seeking highly numerate data experts who can use statistical techniques and the latest technologies to extract clear insights to inform every aspect of their strategy and operations. The Data Analytics MSc will teach you the core mathematical principles of data analysis and how to apply these to real-world scenarios.

  • Be taught by expert academics, including industry practitioners - many of whom are Fellows of the Alan Turing Institute
  • Learn from esteemed Queen Mary’s Institute of Applied Data Sciencemembers and attend lectures and seminars run by the Institute
  • This programme is highly applied and will feature industry connections to help you put your learning into the context of real-world challenges
  • Ideal if you have an interest in problem-solving and some understanding of probability or statistics
  • Suitable for graduates from mathematical/numerate degree subjects, such as maths, statistics, physics, engineering, economics and computer science

Facilities

  • Our new, £18m Mathematical Sciences building with high-quality teaching rooms, private and group study areas and a new social hub
  • A shared office and dedicated computer lab with Bloomberg terminals for MSc students
  • Library access to 8,000 mathematical books and subscriptions to a large number of mathematical journals
  • On-campus accommodation for all new full-time postgraduate students from outside London

Career paths

In our data-driven economy, companies are seeking highly numerate data experts who can use statistical techniques and the latest technologies to extract clear insights to inform every aspect of their strategy and operations.

From financial corporations, to AI start-ups, and across the technology, retail and healthcare industries, highly sought-after data scientists can earn £55,000 per year on average (UK figures from Indeed).

Modules

This module will introduce you to some of the most widely-used techniques in machine learning (ML). After reviewing the necessary background mathematics, we will investigate various ML methods, such as linear regression, polynomial regression and classification with logistic regression. The module covers a very wide range of practical applications, with an emphasis on hands-on numerical work using Python. At the end of the module, you will be able to formalise a ML task, choose the appropriate method to process it numerically, implement the ML algorithm in Python, and assess the methods performance.
