Course Summary

Our Masters of Design in Service Design, Social Innovation and Design Leadership reflects the growing need for the development of new ways of describing, considering, and managing a variety of scenarios in terms of social innovation, service design and design management.

You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the holistic and strategic management of design so you are better equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to senior positions, expand your influence to the wider community, and manage processes to effect real change.

Key study topics

The focus of the course is on the organisational models, methods and approaches needed to shape positive social change, sustainable growth and the use of design as a driver for renewal, sustainability and innovation.

The course is underpinned by the following design principles:

  • Value - emphasising the value of design thinking as a problem-solving methodology and as a means of generating social value through new services
  • Perspective - addressing the increasing need for design professionals and innovators to have a global and wider societal perspective
  • Immersion - approaching research and inter-disciplinary collaboration through project-based learning involving knowledge sharing and live briefs with professional organisations and brands
  • Mindset - developing creative ‘influential’ individuals who are equipped with an innovation and leadership mindset that enables them to come up with original approaches to design, strategy, social and business innovation problems

The majority of MDes students have professional experience allowing them to support and mentor recent undergraduates who come onto the course.

This rich mix of individuals is matched with eclectic professional and discipline specific experience, such as architects, entrepreneurs, engineers, graphic designers, luxury brand professionals, project managers, product designers, business consultants – all learning and working together for a year.

First or second class honours degree 2:1 or 2:2 (or equivalent non-UK qualifications) in a relevant subject, or an equivalent professional qualification in a related subject area. If you are applying directly from an undergraduate degree course without experience or professional practice you must be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of your chosen subject area.
