Postgraduate Reviews of Courses at Royal Holloway, University of London

The best the student union and the introduction of their community officers who represent underrepresented groups on campus. The worst is parking on campus. read full review

Beautiful campus, great faculty, good financial support for PhDs. Great Researcher Development Programme to help students with research skills.
It's a bit remote in Surrey in a lovely but small town. The rail station is a 25 minute walk even though the tracks go right by the campus. They should build a rail station at Royal Holloway to improve access to London. It would make it a much more desirable place to be a student. Also, facilities like bathrooms are often broken. Maintenance should be improved. There are too many students for the size of the campus. The library is bursting at the seams and they are trying to increase the number of masters students. Where are they going to go? There's no room! They've had to turn study spaces into classrooms. Unless they go to online teaching, there is no room to increase the student body. They need to at least build some more buildings, there is plenty of room on campus. I also wish they would clear out some of the forest to provide more accessible green spaces. Much of the campus can't be accessed because its all forest that is fenced off. There is no PhD community so it's very isolating. The weekends on campus are dead. They should open the cafes, eateries and bars on campus on the weekends. Graduate students would use the spaces even if undergrads don't. The campus is really more for undergrads. Postgraduate students are more of an afterthought. The SCR and other PGR spaces like reading rooms should be improved and not be used as classrooms. Whenever we make suggestions on improving PGR life, they get shot down. Improve networking for London based PhD students. There is no community for PhDs. read full review
The campus is gorgeous and has a really cozy feel. Since it is a bit of a smaller uni, you often run into people you know while walking around campus which really adds to the community feeling. As a Masters student, I really appreciate that the campus is in the small town of Egham because it is quieter, but it is close to London so you still get so many opportunities to explore and enjoy yourself. In my course I have half of my classes in the London campus and half in the Egham campus and I think that is the perfect mix. I have also had fantastic experiences with my professors - you can get to know your professors well and meet with them if you put in the effort, and it makes the learning experience so much more personal.
My only complaint as a postgrad would be that most of the events are marketed towards undergrads, but since undergrads make up most of the student body I understand why that demographic would be a priority.
I have found the university support staff to be really helpful so far as well, so I would highly recommend Royal Holloway! read full review

1. **Limited On-Campus Accommodation:** One of the challenges students may face is the limited availability of on-campus accommodation, which can lead to difficulties in securing housing, especially for international or first-year students.

2. **Transportation Accessibility:** While the campus is beautiful, its location in Egham can be somewhat isolated, and transportation options to nearby cities or attractions may be limited, impacting students' ability to explore beyond the campus easily.

3. **Resource Constraints:** Some students may find that certain facilities or resources, such as library resources or laboratory equipment, are limited compared to larger universities, which can sometimes pose challenges for research or coursework.

Improvement Suggestions:

1. **Expand Accommodation Options:** Investing in additional on-campus accommodation or establishing partnerships with off-campus housing providers can help alleviate housing challenges for students.

2. **Enhance Transportation Links:** Improving transportation links to nearby cities or offering shuttle services to popular destinations can enhance students' access to cultural and recreational opportunities outside of the campus.

3. **Invest in Facilities:** Continued investment in facilities and resources, such as libraries, laboratories, and student spaces, can ensure students have access to the tools they need to excel academically and personally.

4. **Improve Communication Channels:** Implementing more efficient communication channels, such as mobile apps or regular newsletters, can help streamline communication between students, faculty, and administration, ensuring important information reaches everyone in a timely manner.

5. **Promote Social Engagement:** Organizing more social events, fostering community-building initiatives, and encouraging student participation in clubs and societies can help create a more vibrant and engaging social scene on campus. read full review
